'Swatting Call' Reported Fake Killing, Hostage: New London Police

Police said a hoax call Sunday morning created 'a very real and substantial risk to first responders and the general public.'

NEW LONDON, CT — Police are investigating a "swatting call" that occurred over the weekend.

Police received a call Sunday at 7:20 a.m. The caller claimed to have killed one person and held another hostage at a Linden Street home.

Police responded, established a perimeter, and began efforts to keep area residents safe.

Following an investigation, police found this was a "swatting call." Police described this as a hoax phone call that reports a serious crime "for a rapid and highly elevated response" from emergency services.

"Swatting calls create a very real and substantial risk to first responders and the general public," police said in a statement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
