NEW LONDON, CT — A renovation project to create a regional school for children with special needs at the former Bet El synagogue broke ground Wednesday, the New London Day reported.

According to the Day, the planned $5.1 million renovation will transform the building into the Ocean Avenue LEARNing Academy. The building was purchased last year from Congregation Beth El for $1.9 million.

The new school is planned to open in November, according to the Day. LEARN officials said about 70 students are expected to move to the new school by the New Year.
