Whittling Out The Skrimshander

Since the launch of the New London Patch in December of 2010, I've been running a column on Sunday called The Skrimshander Articles. Based on the line in Herman Melville's Moby Dick about the "numerous little ingenious contrivances [whalemen] elaborately carve out of the rough material," this weekly feature has covered everything from local history and slice-of-lice incidents to editorials and travel. Recently, a number of factors have made it more difficult to maintain this column. The new setup puts the "Speak Out" opinion section into the Boards, an area of the site meant to be more exclusive to readers. In addition, I've taken on management of the Montville Patch and I could use a little extra time each week to oversee the duties of that site. It's been a lot of fun writing this column, and I might occasionally sneak in a humor piece. For now, I'm considering The Skrimshander Articles to be quasi-retired and would encourage readers to make use of the site's blogging option or Speak Out section to share your own thoughts and columns.
