April Programs at the CVH Animal Sanctuary

The CVH Animal Sanctuary in Newtown promotes compassion and empathy through educational events that foster the human-animal connection. The sanctuary was started in 2013 to honor the life of Catherine Violet Hubbard a six-year-old victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy and passionate animal lover. Through the sanctuary’s educational programs, individuals are taught the importance of protecting animals and the environment and how they too can spread kindness throughout their communities. In celebration of Jane Goodall’s 90th birthday on April 3rd, the sanctuary is proud to bring this FREE screening of REASONS FOR HOPE to Newtown’s Edmond Town Hall Theater.

Drawing on decades of work by the world’s most famous living ethologist and environmentalist, Jane Goodall – Reasons for Hope – is an uplifting journey around the globe to highlight good news stories that will inspire people to make a difference in the world around them.

Featured stories such as the Northern Bald Ibis’ migration over the Alps, the re-introduction of the American Bison by the Blackfeet Nation, the worldwide recognized Sudbury Regreening Story, Arizona’s leadership in renewable energy and inspiring youth-led initiatives involved in Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots align with historic footage of Jane’s beginnings as a chimpanzee researcher.

Throughout, the film reinforces Jane’s four pillars of hope that signal tremendous hope for the future: the amazing human intellect, the resilience of nature, the power and dedication of young people, and the indomitable human spirit. FREE EVENT - Amazing Amphibians & Radical Reptiles

Amphibians and reptiles might seem similar but these two distinct classes have striking differences. From their skin and texture, to their environment and habits, you’ll be amazed at how these animals adapt in the natural world. Together, we’ll learn how to listen and identify our native amphibians by their calls, discover some really radical reptiles, and explore what makes these creatures so unique! Looking for a sure sign of spring? Join Ken Elkins, Director of the CT Audubon Coastal Center, at the CVH Animal Sanctuary as we search for this shy bird, the American Woodcock. Come experience the amazing upward spiral courtship flight as the male cuts loose to perform his mating ritual to impress the female.

This event requires standing still in the dark, listening for the bird call and watching aerial flight. Ages 8 years and above. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please dress appropriately for early spring weather, hiking/snow/mud boots, hats, gloves, hand warmers, etc and bring a flashlight or headlamp. For the LLove of Llamas

Sometimes it’s hard to tell who smiles more at our LLOVE OF LLAMAS event…the llamas or the people who meet them! Afterall, who couldn’t fall in love with these incredible creatures? Join us at the sanctuary for this rare opportunity to meet and interact with miniature Argentinian, Bolivian, Chilean & Peruvian Llamas! Rowanwood Farm will discuss the many variations of llamas and help you learn about their origins, fiber types and patterns. You’ll see how llamas are highly intelligent and social animals with excellent survival skills, how their thick coats allow them to thrive in cool climates and their gentle humming allows them to communicate with their herd.
