Bear Spotted in Newtown

A resident spotted the animal on Tuesday.

A Newtown Patch reader spotted a bear in town on Tuesday and shared the photo with us.

The bear was seen on the corner of Old Green Road and Valley Field Road South in Sandy Hook.

“Thought you might want to share to warn residents. Our neighborhood bear is out and roaming,” wrote Newtown Patch reader Erin Kramer.

According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), bear sightings are becoming more and more common in Connecticut and as the population continues to increase, we can expect to see more bears.

If you see a bear:

  • Enjoy it from a distance.
  • Advertise your presence by shouting and waving your arms or walk slowly away.
  • Never attempt to feed or attract bears.

Report bear sightings to the Wildlife Division, at (860) 675-8130.
