Boys Lax Snaps Back with Drubbing of Bunnell
South-West Conference schedule provides needed respite from season's first setback
The yin and yang of the South-West Conference boys lacrosse reared forth its mediocre head once again Friday night, as the Nighthawks boys lacrosse team pounded the Bunnell Bulldogs, 20-1.
Despite a Wednesday loss to Staples, Newtown is now 12-1 overall and a gaudy 10-0 in the conference. The Nighthawks, who have a foundation based on potent offense and punishing defense, have outscored their SWC opponents by 171-31.
Against Bunnell, Newtown's Dan Hebert had four goals and two assists and Matt Vavrek led the attack with two goals and an assist. Ted Benoit got the start in goal and was backed up by sophomore Evan Isaacs to secure the win.

Newtown scored nine first quarter goals, paced by Vavrek and Hebert, who had three goals and an assist between them. Trey Trudell, Will Northrop, Dan Sclafani, and Justin Brophy also twinkled the twine in the first quarter.
The varied talent levels were palpable throughout the game as Newtown continued to win face offs and control the ball. Cory Fisher won 12 of 13 at the center “X,” and Brendan McNamara continued his success at the draw by winning 11 of 12 attempts.

Senior midfielder Matthew Genovese saw considerable time in this game, and his hustle and desire kept Newtown safely in front. Middie Justin Spath also used his athleticism and effort to make several quality plays that kept Bunnell off the board.
After a Monday night game against Norwalk, conference foes Masuk and Weston wait in the wings for the Nighthawks next week.
Monday night is Senior Night — and for Colby Summerlin, Matt Genovese, Brandon Body, Dan Sclafani, Jeremy Schaniel, Tom Murphy, Max Nacewicz, Will Northrop and Lewis Thompson, this will be their final regular season game in a Nighthawk uniform.
There are certainly more accomplishments for the team to rise to in the off-season, but Monday promises to be a memorable evening for Nighthawks lacrosse fans. The boys will take on Norwalk at 7 p.m. with Senior Night ceremonies beforehand.
