Annual Newtown Community Running Event Brings Runners and Walkers Together for the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association in honor of Greg Ritzinger on August 30, 2026.
Newtown, Connecticut, March 23, 2026 – Runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts are gearing up for the 1st Annual Newtown Community Running Event, taking pace on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at Fairfield Hills.&nbsp; Hosted by Newtown Road Runners, this event will host Newtown’s first ever half marathon and the net proceeds go to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association in honor of Greg Ritzinger, recognizing his service and dedication to the community.&nbsp; Greg was an EMT and one of the original members of the Newtown Road Runners group.
Participants can choose from Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and a Free Kid’s Run.&nbsp; The event will also feature local vendors making it a full day of celebration for the community.
“We are thrilled to bring a half marathon to Newtown for a great cause”, said Bruce Goulart, Race Director.
Organizers are seeking business, organizations and individuals to partner as event sponsors.&nbsp; Sponsorship opportunities may include logo placement on race shirts, website and recognition in event promotions.
Volunteers are also needed for various help prior to and on the day of the event.&nbsp; If you are interested in sponsoring and/or volunteering, please call Bruce Goulart at (203) 482-2529.
Registration is open now at runsignup.com.&nbsp; The cost to participate are as follows: Half Marathan Runners/Walkers $75; 10K Runners/Walkers $55, 5K Runners/Walkers $35 and Free Kid’s Run.

Step away from screens and into the great outdoors for an old-fashioned Family Camp! Experience a joyful afternoon of classic camp fun, hands-on discovery, and nature exploration designed for all ages.
During our 5 Senses Adventure, families will take a guided walk through the sanctuary using sight, sound, touch, smell, and even a little imagination to discover the hidden wonders of local plants and wildlife. Whether you’re three or ninety-three, there’s always something new to notice in nature.
At our collaborative craft station, Build It Forward, families will work side-by-side to create real wildlife habitat projects like bluebird boxes and bee hotels – important creations that can help support animals right in your own backyard.
Then head over to The Backyard Lab, where curiosity takes center stage through hands-on science experiments exploring the chemistry and physics hidden within everyday materials. Designed to spark wonder and playful learning, these activities encourage families to ask questions and test ideas together.

Dickinson Memorial Park

In 2013, in response to the Sandy Hook School tragedy, a small group of Newtown High School alumni organized the “Great Newtown Reunion, a Day of Healing,” and invited the popular 1970s Newtown band, Panacea, to reunite to close out the event, adding some warm memories for many attendees. 
Original band members returned to Newtown from around the country to play together for the first time in 50 years. Performers and attendees alike enjoyed the band reunion so much that Panacea has continued to host this informal annual reunion at Dickinson Park almost every Labor Day weekend for the past 13 years, filling the pavilion with crowds of friends, old and new, with even some teachers and administrators making surprise appearances. 
This year’s lineup includes original Panacea members Corky Ballard bass, vocals; Leslie Ballard flute, vocals; with guests longtime Panacea keyboardist Christian Martirano; Tony Traina, drums; Jim Lynch, guitar; Steve Moran, sax; and Austen Lesu trumpet.Sound by Thunder &amp; Lighting Productions.
This year’s Reunion is sponsored by Thomas Stickles’ Clearheart Construction, which has also generously supported the reunion in several past years. These contributions have helped to keep our community connected, and are greatly appreciated by the band members, and all who attend. 
The original Panacea band lineup included Newtowners siblings Leslie Ballard, Corky Ballard, Rick Kuhn, Mat Harris, Jon Dodson, and Bruce Tibbitts. 
In 1970, Panacea won the All-State Battle of the Bands, featuring a program of original music written by Corky Ballard and drummer Rick Kuhn, with guitarist Jon Dodson, and Leslie Ballard playing flute. All four took turns as lead vocalists. The group became a popular staple for proms, dances, reunions, and weddings, encouraging all of the members to continue careers in music. 
Although hosted as a town-wide event, the Reunion has also become a tradition for many Newtown high school grads, some traveling from other countries, as an opportunity to meet up and reconnect with their hometown friends. It’s rain or shine, and all are welcome. 
 Nonperishable items will be collected for Panacea’s Annual Bridget Seaman FAITH Food Pantry Drive. (See FAITH webpage for list of needs.) The pantry collection has been a feature since the first reunion, and Bridget Seaman volunteered to run the donation table. The pantry collection was renamed in Bridget’s honor on her passing.
The Wafel Hut food truck will be serving fresh sweet and savory Belgian waffles all day. 
Guests are welcome to bring nonalcoholic beverages, but grilling is not allowed. Guests are reminded that glass containers and pets are not permitted in the park, with the exception of identified service dogs,

Continuing a Labor Day weekend tradition, nonperishables and dry goods will be collected at the Panacea &amp;&nbsp;Friends Newtown Reunion for the Bridget Seaman FAITH&nbsp;Food Pantry Drive from 2:00- 6:00 at the Dickinson Park Pavilion during Panacea's free concert. Newtowner Bridget Seaman was asked to man the donation table at the first drive, and every year thereafter she made it a feature, donning costumes and taking photos of guests with her signature Flat Bridget paper doll. The drive was named in her honor upon her passing. Her spirit lives on through the generosity of the contributors. This year, cash may also be donated.&nbsp; A free drawing for a one-year subscription to The Newtown Bee newspaper will also be held.&nbsp;

Newtown Senior Center

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will present Karen Israel demonstrating “Slice of Life” in pastel on Tuesday evening September 8th at 7:30 pm at The Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street, Newtown, CT. The demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.


Karen is an elected member of many art organizations such as the American Artists Professional League, Hudson Valley Art Association, Pastel Society of America, Salmagundi Club and the Lyme Art Association. Karen conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States and she has served as juror for many national competitions.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Over the past 20 years Karen has garnered awards in many national juried competitions.Her work is held in private collections throughout the United States.
Most recently, Karen Israel’s painting was selected Third Place in the 2026 Pastel 100 competition-Figures/Portrait Division. Karen’s work was featured in the March 2025 issue of American Art Collector.In past years, Karen’s work was featured in the Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 and Practique Des Arts Magazine.
