Gabby Giffords Moved to Write Book After Sandy Hook School Shootings

"Newtown moved us from words to action," Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords writes in her new book.

Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, share their views on responsible gun ownership in their recently released book Enough: Our Fight to Keep America Safe From Gun Violence.

After being shot in Tuscon, Ariz. in 2011, Giffords’ struggle and fight turned her from someone fighting for her own life, to now, someone who is fighting for others. The movie theater massacre in Aurora, Col. that killed 12, and months later, the Sandy Hook School shootings that took the lives of 20 children and six adults, is what moved Giffords to do something.

“When Mark and I heard the news that 20 children had been massacred in their classrooms at Sandy Hook Elementary, we both said, “Enough!” to the violence that’s ripping our communities apart. “Enough” is also the title of our new book, where we write about the path forward for some commonsense solutions that will help make our country safer,” Giffords wrote on her Facebook page.

Enough takes the reader behind the scenes of the couple’s creation of Americans for Responsible Solutions, a nonprofit organization committed to promoting responsible gun ownership.

Giffords and Kelly’s advocacy group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, is a section 501(c)(4) organization whose mission is to “protect the rights of Americans to own guns for collection, recreation, and protection. But they also agree with the vast majority of Americans, including gun owners, that commonsense protections from gun violence can prevent shootings from shattering communities like Tucson, Aurora, and Newtown,” according to their website.
