Martha “Marty” Bishop, of Bethel, has a varied box of talents. She taught elementary as well as Middle School before becoming a Middle School Librarian. After retiring, she formed “The Mask and Wig” at the C.H. Booth Library which helped young adults develop their acting and storytelling skills. Marty has acted herself in Community Theater and Murder Mystery Theater here in Newtown, as well as Brookfield and Ridgefield. A member of the CT Storytelling Center, she runs the annual Tellabration in Newtown and Bethel and participates in various other events around the state. She is a published author of the children’s picture book “Rafe’s Grand Performance” and is a member of the band “Senior Melodiers” playing violin. She also has experience in conducting ghost walks in Bethel where she has entertained with her ghostly tales for several years.
The Matthew Curtiss House is a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture. Constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss Jr. in 1781, the Newtown Historical Society purchased and restored it to its original condition in 1970. The society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization. During the year we offer open houses with living history demonstrations, a lecture series, and a summer history camp for kids among other special events. All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests and fund raisers such as the antique show, house and garden tour and publication sales. New members are always welcome and volunteers are needed to help organize and run our many events.
