Latest Newtown Coronavirus Updates

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is impacting Newtown:

NEWTOWN, CT — It appears that the new coronavirus will continue to dramatically alter life in Newtown and beyond for the next several months.

Connecticut announced 1,090 new coronavirus cases on Friday, which brings the state total to 4,914; Newtown has 48 positive cases . there have been 131 total deaths and 989 hospitalizations.

Overall more than 20,000 coronavirus tests have been performed in the state. Gov. Ned Lamont noted a higher percent of tests were coming back positive; the newest batch had 1,090 positives out of 1,715 total tests.

The Newtown Bee announced that it would temporarily suspend publishing its physical newspaper, but news will still be available on its website and social media accounts.

The Newtown Municipal Center has been open for appointments only since March 16. The town was notified of its first positive coronavirus result March 22.

All parks have been closed since March 17 with the exception of Pole Bridge and Orchard Hill Preserves for hiking.

"The single best way to slow the spread is to practice social distancing, and the Town is recommending that all individuals both adults and children, stay home and not interact with individuals outside of the household" said First Selectman Dan Rosenthal. "Social distancing is crucial in helping to reduce the spread of the virus and limit the number of people who are infected."

Newtown Schools
Schools will be closed until at least April 20, per Gov. Ned Lamont's executive order. Students are using Google Classroom to complete and submit assignments.

Newtown Businesses

The town has compiled a list of restaurants offering takeout and delivery. Patch is compiling a list of businesses that are open or closed in town. Business owners can add their information using a Google Form.
