Newtown Lions Club Launches April Food Drive

The Newtown Lions Club will hold a month-long food drive at the Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street, Fairfield Hills Campus, Newtown from Sunday, April 3 through Saturday, April 30, 2022. The drive will benefit the FAITH Food pantry and other pantries serving the Newtown area and is part of a larger Connecticut Lions initiative called “Connecticut Lions Feeding the Hungry” that started in October of 2019.”

According to drive leader Lion Kevin Corey, who regularly volunteers at the FAITH Food Pantry, “Many local families and individuals rely on food pantries and the Covid epidemic continues to cause increased need. Along with the Newtown community, we understand that keeping our food pantries stocked is an ongoing challenge, not a once-and-done endeavor. The Lions Club is proud to help by organizing this spring collection and proud of Newtown for its continuing generosity.”

Corey noted that donated items should include in-date, non-perishable food, pet food, personal care, and household items. Food items that food pantries appreciate include canned peas, canned corn, canned fruit, beef stew, corned beef hash, canned chicken and tuna, Chef Boyardee, pasta and pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly, bottled juices, canola or olive oil, ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressing, tomato paste, pancake syrup, cereals, and snacks. Personal care items are also needed, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, deodorants, hand lotion, hand soap, and tissues as well as cleaning products, paper towels, and dish soap. Donations of cat food, dog food, and cat litter are also important.

The Lions Club thanks the local community for its faithful support of neighbors in need. Donors should deliver their Food Drive items to the Newtown Community Center at 8 Simpson St where labeled boxes will be available Sunday, April 3 through Saturday, April 30.
