Newtown Police Charge NY Man With Forgery, Identity Theft In Bank Scam
According to their police report, the suspect refused to provide his correct name, and was found to be in possession of a fake passport.
NEWTOWN, CT — A Bayshore, NY man was charged with forgery and other offenses after police say he tried to obtain money from local banks under false pretenses.
On Mar. 21, officers from the Newtown Police Department were called to Union Savings Bank on Commerce Street after receiving a complaint that someone was impersonating a bank customer. Bank employees had been tipped off that Darren Brown, 57, had been going to other banks in the area earlier in the day trying to obtain statements and money by using false identification cards. When Brown appeared at the Commerce Street branch of USB, employees called the police.
According to their police report, Brown refused to provide his correct name and date of birth, and was found to be in possession of a fake U.S. passport. Police arrested Brown, who refused to be processed and was recorded as "John Doe,"according to their report.

Police charged Brown with first-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, first-degree identity theft, third-degree criminal attempt of larceny, and interfering with an officer. He was held in police custody on a $250,000 bond.
The next day, police transported "Doe" to Danbury Superior Court where the court was able to identify him.
