Newtown Police K9 Passes Away

The department says the K9's death was unexpected.

NEWTOWN, CT — The Newtown Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own after a recent cancer diagnosis. K9 Saint Michael passed away Sunday evening after a battle at the NVS Animal Hospital in Newtown. Police say that Saint Michael was in great spirits at the time of his passing.

"We sincerely believed with the right treatment plan and with his great physical condition, his life could have been extended for at least a year if not more, so with that said, today was not expected," wrote the department on Facebook.

The department had set up a gofundme page for K-9 Saint Michael for donations to help cover his medical costs related to the diagnosis. Saint Michael had served the town since 2014 with handler Officer Felicia Figol.
