Newtown Returns To Polls For 2nd School Budget Referendum Tuesday

NEWTOWN, CT — Voters will return to the polls in Newtown Tuesday for a second attempt at passing the 2024-25 schools budget.

Last month, residents rejected the Board of Education's $88.8 million proposed spending plan by a vote of 1,701-to-1,194, calling the 4.4 percent increase "too high." Voter turnout was slightly over 15 percent.

At its April 29 meeting, the Legislative Council reduced the BOE's proposal by $1,408,307. The new $87,409,066 plan represents a 2.75 percent spending increase over the current school budget.

Voters narrowly approved the proposed town budget last month, according to the town's Registrar of Voters. That new spending plan represents a 2.75 percent increase over the current budget.

The polls at Newtown Middle School will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
