Newtown To Turn Orange On Gun Violence Awareness Day

Students will lead the #WearOrange march and rally to demand action on gun violence prevention.

NEWTOWN, CT -- Governor Dannel Malloy has issued a proclamation that June 2, 2018 is Gun Violence Awareness Day for the State of Connecticut and First Selectman Dan Rosenthal has issued the same for the Town of Newtown. Friday, June 1, 2017 marks the 4th Annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Anti-gun violence groups have organized a march and rally for Saturday. The #WearOrange march is scheduled for Saturday, June 2, from 5-7 p.m. It will proceed from Fairfield Hills (3 Primrose Lane, Newtown) to Newtown Middle School and back again. Speakers at the rally will include U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Newtown Selectman Jim Gaston. as well as members of Sandy Hook Promise, Newtown Action Alliance, CT Against Gun Violence, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America and other groups.

Orange -- the color traditionally worn by hunters to protect themselves -- was chosen as the color of the movement by friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old Chicago high school student killed by gunfire. She would have been 21 on June 2, 2018.
