Sandy Hook Organic Farmers Market Opens
Tuesday was the official start of the Sandy Hook Organic Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills.
The Sandy Hook Organic Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills is open for the season. At 2 p.m. sharp, market master Mary Fellows opened the 2011 farmers market season at Fairfield Hills campus, and almost immediately the sales began.
This is the second year the popular market has opened at Fairfield Hills, although the ninth year it is in operation. The market will run, rain or shine, from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 18.
Fresh vegetables from local farms as well as those from across the state are a highlight, although other products such as meat, flowers, organic lemonade, preserves, cheeses and bakery products are showcased.

Sue Shortt, of Short's Farm & Garden, said this should be a good year for green vegetables, adding that she and other farmers are keeping a close eye out on tomato plants, which can fall victim to blights, especially when the growing season is wet.
