Sandy Hook Wish Kid Chose an Adventurous Wish

Jack Maher's wish teaches perseverance

Jack was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 12-years-old. His illness presents a challenge of its own, but when presented with an opportunity to receive a wish from Make-A-Wish® Connecticut, this brave teen opted to tackle yet another challenge.

Jack initially dreamt of an island vacation, like Hawaii, but instead opted to take on the Colorado Rocky Mountains and learn how to snowboard.

In March 2019, Jack and his family flew to Denver, starting off his wish trip with a five-hour private snowboarding lesson. “Jack had wanted to snowboard for years. It was very fun and exciting, but it challenged him, and all of us, physically,” shared Jack’s mom. “You fall and get up a lot when you are learning,” Jack’s mom mentioned – an important life lesson about perseverance and not giving up. After his lesson Jack was practically a pro and spent the rest of his trip hitting the slopes in Steamboat Springs.
