Today's Weather: Low pressure moving out to sea off of North Carolina. A cold front stretches across central New England separating a 20 degree difference. Bridgeport reported temps in the 30s while Burlington is in the low teens. High pressure continues to dominate the upper Midwest with unorganized low pressure over the Gulf States from FL to TX. Coldest air is found over Saskatchewan and the NW Territories -33.
Radar: A large area of rain stretches from the Mid Atlantic Coast to TX. Snow is falling from MO to WI west to NB.
GFS: The GFS organizes the low pressure areas over the Gulf Coast into a single storm over LA that moves into KY over the next 12 hours. Snow moves into New England this evening. This run of the GFS is pushing milder air farther north than the last run. So the GFS is now anticipating mixed precip. up to northern New England with rain for southern New England Thursday. A secondary forms in the Gulf of Maine but the western low over the St. Lawrence Valley dominates, hence the push of milder air into the Northeast. The 5400m (rain/snow line) thickness reaches the Canadian border while the 850mb zero isotherm only reaches to central VT,NH and southeast ME. The storm system exits New England Thursday night with a cold flow returning along with the usual lake and mountain snow showers.
Saturday afternoon the GFS forms a new storm over AK and moves to western PA Saturday night. Snow spreads from southwest New England northeastward. Snow changes to rain in the early morning hours of Sunday in southern New England, with northern New England changing to a mix Sunday afternoon. The GFS shows the rain and mixed precip. ending as snow Sunday afternoon. This sets up for a very cold start to next week.
