North Branford Police Assist with Arrest of Hamden Shooting Suspect

The suspect, who was arrested following an extensive investigation, was taken into custody at his girlfriend's house in Northford: BREAKING

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man is accused of shooting four people outside of the Highwood Bar and Grill on Dixwell Avenue in August.

Hamden Police arrested Heshimu Barker, 44, at his girlfriend’s home in Northford on Tuesday following an extensive investigation, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

On Aug. 20, shortly after midnight, Hamden Police responded to the area of Dixwell Avenue and Morse Street on the report of multiple gunshot victims.

Moments later, officers located four gunshot victims inside the Highwood Bar and Grill. The victims were treated at the scene by Hamden Fire Rescue. Three of the victims were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that the four victims were shot near a bench, located outside of the establishment, and the shooter fled in a motor vehicle.

Detective Joseph Liguori conducted an extensive investigation, which lead to the application of an arrest warrant for Barker. The court approved the arrest warrant application.

On Sept. 20, Hamden Police Detective Raymond Quinn and other members of the United States Marshal Service Connecticut Violent Fugitive Task Force, along with officers from the North Branford Police Department, arrested Barker at his girlfriend’s residence on Reeds Gap Road in Northford, according to Smith.

Barker was subsequently transported to Hamden Police Headquarters.

Barker, of Pond Street in New Haven, was charged with four counts of first-degree assault, criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit. Barker, who was detained on a court-ordered $500,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Oct. 4.
