North Branford's Turn Thursday: 90 Cars Stopped By 6-Town Traffic Unit

The multi-town traffic enforcement initiative Thursday led to an alleged drunk driver doing 74 in a 45 MPH zone, among some 90 other stops.

NORTH BRANFORD, CT —More than 90 vehicles were pulled over Thursday in North Branford and Northford as part of the South Central Regional Traffic Unit initiative to crack down on motorists breaking the law.

The unit, made up of police from North Branford, North Haven, East Haven, Branford, Guilford and Madison police departments, is focused on distracted driving, speeding and other violations which lead to accidents and injuries. And, it provides "education and safety information" to drivers, police noted. It began enforcement in mid-June. Read the full story here.

Of the dozens of cars pulled over, one car stop in particular was highlighted.

A North Branford man stopped at 9:30 a.m. Thursday was driving 74 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. In addition to a speeding ticket, the driver was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and, for drinking while driving.

"We will continue this enforcement in North Branford and in the surroundings towns," North Branford police said, noting that while officers "did not get to every road on our list," the team will be back. Very soon, police said.

"Maybe even during the evening rush hour," police added. "Safety and awareness is our goal."

The initiative kicked off in East Haven on June 15 when police from all six towns worked in tandem to stop more than 50 cars. East Haven police Capt. Joseph M. Murgo said then that enforcement action included verbal warnings, infractions, misdemeanor arrests and criminal arrests

On June 28, Branford had its go with some 55 drivers pulled over.
