1,500 Vehicles 'Take Over' Busy Road In North Haven: Police

Police said holiday shoppers were stuck in parking lots, I-91 was backed up, and there were other issues because of the "street takeover."

NORTH HAVEN, CT — More than 1,500 vehicles arrived at Universal Drive in North Haven as part of a “street takeover” on Saturday night, according to police.

Police said the vehicles arrived around 8 p.m. and were from multiple states and “brought spectators who lined Universal Drive to watch while the busy roadway was completely shut down and holiday shoppers were stuck in parking lots with no way to leave,” according to officials.

Interstate 91 was also backed up in both directions for over a mile, police said.

“In addition to our North Haven Officers, officers from Meriden, Wallingford, Hamden, West Haven, Branford and the State Police assisted us with the situation,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “During this event, there were several calls for service on Universal Drive that were difficult to respond to including a medical emergency, and an assault.

“Any attempts at street takeovers or large-scale events blocking the roadways denying our citizens access to public safety will not be tolerated. We will continue to investigate this and hold all parties involved accountable.
