6 Suspects Burglarize Cars In 1 Minute: North Haven PD (UPDATED)
WATCH: Police share surveillance video of suspects recently entering unlocked vehicles overnight in North Haven.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — The wave of car burglaries in the area continues and residents are reminded to lock their vehicles. North Haven Police shared video of a recent incident that shows it took six suspects only about one minute to get out of their cars and enter two unlocked cars in a Pool Road driveway. Police said the third vehicle parked in the driveway was locked and, therefore, wasn’t entered.
The surveillance video (which can be seen at the end of this article) is from Jan. 4 and shows two vehicles pull up and park on the road at 2 a.m.
“Six suspects exited the cars, spread out looking for unlocked cars,” North Haven Police wrote in a post on Facebook. “They returned to their cars about one minute later. One other report of a theft from an unlocked car was reported that morning.”

In a Wednesday night update, after the video had been viewed more than 6,700 times, North Haven Police said they aren’t saying that locking your car solves all problems, but it will “stop these guys from stealing from you.”
There were more than 250 thefts from vehicles reported in North Haven last year, according to police, who added that it is “common sense to lock your doors.”

“This is not a North Haven problem; it is a statewide issue,” police wrote on Facebook. “This is an incredibly popular trend in crimes of opportunity, so take the opportunity away.
“There have been a few comments regarding suspects breaking windows if the doors are locked, or keying your car. That is not the case, and has not been so for a very long time. Criminals have been checking the doors to see if they are locked. Once inside the unlocked vehicles, they try the push button start to see if a key fob is in the car. If that doesn’t work, they rummage through the car for valuables and leave.
“We have made arrests, but enforcement will not stop these crimes of opportunities. This is not just one or two crews of kids. We are not turning blame onto the public, we are simply asking for help. Locking your cars, homes, and sheds is common sense. There is no guarantee you will not be a victim of a theft, but it will drastically reduce the odds.
“Thank you to everyone who is willing to join our efforts to keep North Haven a safe place. #9pmroutine.”
