Yaccarino: Impressed By Connecticut’s Youth

I am continually impressed with the youth of North Haven and our state.  Whether at the capitol serving in my role as your elected state representative or through daily interactions in town I see evidence of strong family values and smart, ethical individuals who will do great things.

Last year in Hartford I attended several events where I was able to speak directly with kids who will undoubtedly make a huge impact on our state.  One event was a celebration to honor volunteer organ donors and to celebrate those who are alive today because of the selfless acts of others.  Organ donation may be a deeply personal decision, but during that event I met several young adults who considered the implications of checking that little box on their license.  These young men and women made a decision to help others and I applaud them for their convictions.  

On a more local level, in the last two weeks I have had the distinct pleasure of presenting six separate legislative citations to young men who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

As a longtime volunteer with local Scouting programs I know what it takes to achieve such a lofty goal - the highest award in Boy Scouts.  The hard work, dedication and perseverance these fine young men demonstrated in reaching the rank of Eagle Scout personifies the best qualities our town has to offer.  But as challenging a journey as this was for them I can guarantee they did not make it alone.  Their family, scout leaders, friends and fellow scouts were there to push them when times were tough, offer assistance when needed and to help them make the right decision to stay on path to achieve their goals.  I am proud of each of them and I was honored to be able to recognize their achievement as North Haven’s State Representative.

I am an optimistic person by nature and I choose to see the best in others; this is easy when I meet people like those six new Eagle Scouts.  I have no doubts that our state and our country are in a difficult place with financial difficulties, political differences and the challenges of everyday life.  However, when I see young adults with a level of maturity well past their age I do not despair for our future.   I know North Haven, our state and our country will be fine as long as we keep doing what we can to make sure our youth learn the important lessons of teamwork, perseverance, dignity and respect.
