WATCH: Tribute Video for North Haven's John Liquori, 20

Theodore Spalding was sentenced Thursday for the death of Liquori, who was struck and killed while he was jogging last July.

North Haven’s Theodore Spalding, 73, was sentenced to serve four years in prison for the death of 20-year-old John Liquori, who was struck by Spalding’s pickup truck while jogging last summer.

Spalding received his sentence on Thursday after agreeing to a plea bargain in May instead of going to trial and pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

Liquori was struck by Spalding’s truck on Middletown Avenue in North Haven on July 16 2014 and later died at the hospital.

Randall Beach of the New Haven Register reports the courtroom was packed with Liquori’s family and friends along with representatives of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The hearing was filled with emotional statements and punctuated by a moving video tribute that showed Liquori loving life at various ages with Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” providing the soundtrack.

Liquori’s mother, Lisa Liquori, read a 12-page statement, recalling in detail her son’s final day and at one point saying the following to Spalding (via the Register):

“I do not know how you can live with yourself every day, Mr. Spalding, knowing that your poor judgment and actions killed our son and Joe’s brother. You have not only killed our son, but you killed his family. Despite us still physically being alive, we are dead inside.”
