North Haven Exceeds State Averages on CMT
No drastic improvements in performance compared to 2010.
North Haven scored consistently above state averages on this year's Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT), issued annually to students in grades three through eight.
Like the CAPT, the results of which were released yesterday, the CMT ranks students according to five performance brackets, ranging from "below basic" proficiency to "advanced" scoring in four subject areas. Math, reading and writing skill sets are tested at every grade level, and science is covered in grades five and eight.
The CMT views "proficient" scores as an indicator that students in a given district are making "adequate yearly progress" in their schools under No Child Left Behind, whereas "goal" marks correspond to a state-defined target for academic performance.

In every subject, across every grade-level, the majority of North Haven students not only reached goal, but exceeded state averages for performance on the test.
Scores for the town on this year's CMT remained relatively similar to those recorded in 2010, with performance improving or declining marginally in various grades. For example, math and science scores for eighth graders dropped by several percentage points this year from last, while gains were made in reading and writing. Third graders performed worse in math and reading, but showed growth in writing.

Meanwhile, statewide performance improved consistently from 2010 in the vast majority of subject areas. For eighth graders, scores in reading and math improved by about 8%, science by 4%, and writing by 2%.
