Obituary: Kenneth A. Tullo, 79, of North Haven

He was a member of the legendary "Wonder Five" Hillhouse basketball team and is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Kenneth Anthony Tullo, 79, of North Haven, died peacefully on January 26, 2019 at Masonicare Hospice. He was the husband of Annevivian Mongillo Tullo and they were married for 53 years. Ken was born in East Lyme on July 15, 1939 to the late Rose Coviello. He is predeceased his parents Americo Tullo and Theresa Acerra Tullo and his brothers Michael Tullo and Joseph (JoJo) Tullo.

Besides his wife Annevivian, he leaves his children, Kenny Tullo (wife Sashya Tullo) and Valerie D'Angelo Tullo (husband Michael D'Angelo), and his grandchildren Michael John D'Angelo, Amari Tullo and Kenya Tullo and his sister-in-law Helen Tullo.

Ken worked for 43 years at Yale University. Ken was also a co-owner with Michael Santarcangelo in Tul-San Cleaning Services which they operated for over 20 years. Ken attended St. John’s grammar school and Hillhouse High School where he excelled in sports. He was a member of the legendary “Wonder Five” basketball team that won the 1955 Connecticut state championship and participated in the New England Tournament at Boston Garden. As a senior he was elected captain of the team.

Among his accolades from that season: he won the James E. Coogan award for being the outstanding player of Hillhouse/Wilbur Cross game and he was named first team All-State by the New Haven Register. Ken’s back and forth scoring duel with Johnny Egan during the Hillhouse/Weaver game on March 8, 1957 at the old New Haven Arena is considered one of the most memorable contests in Connecticut high school hoops history.

In 2000 the New Haven Tap-Off Club inducted Ken into their Hall of Fame. And in 2013 Ken was inducted into the Hillhouse High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Friends may call at the PORTO FUNERAL HOME 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte 80) East Haven on FRIDAY from 5:00-8:00 PM and are asked to go DIRECTLY to St. Anthony's Church on SATURDAY MORNING at 10:00 to celebrate A Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private.
