Pedestrian Struck By DUI Driver, Man Arrested: North Haven Police

A woman was hospitalized after being struck by a DUI driver while she was walking toward her home on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 47-year-old woman was struck by a DUI driver while she was walking toward her home Tuesday afternoon in North Haven, according to police. The victim suffered a head injury in the crash and was taken to an area hospital where she is currently in stable condition, North Haven Police said on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the area of 1053 Hartford Turnpike on the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle shortly after 2 p.m. on Oct. 17. Upon arrival, crews found the woman on the side of the road suffering from a “visible head injury,” according to police.

Police said the investigation revealed the driver of the vehicle, 39-year-old Joshua Pires, was driving southbound on Hartford Turnpike. His vehicle drifted to the right side of the road where he struck the pedestrian, who was walking northbound toward her residence, according to police.

Pires was tested for impairment and subsequently arrested, police said.

He was charged with operating under the influence, driving under suspension, failure to drive in proper lane and second-degree assault with a motor vehicle.
