Suspect Bites Security Guard, Flees With 3 Young Kids In Car: PD
Police say a woman assaulted a security guard at Target and engaged officers in a pursuit on I-91 with children ages 5, 4, and 1 in the car.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 24-year-old woman is accused of attempting to steal $400 worth of items from Target, biting a security guard and engaging police in a chase on I-91 with three young children — ages 5, 4, and 1 — in the car, according to police. At about 9 p.m. on July 30, North Haven Police responded to Target on Universal Drive on the report of a theft.
Police said Vernasia Miller-Smith, 24, attempted to leave the store with approximately $400 worth of items and she began to fight when security tried to stop her. Miller-Smith is accused of scratching the security officer’s face and biting him, according to police. She fled the parking lot before police arrived on the scene.
Police located her vehicle on Universal Drive, but she refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed south on I-91, according to police. Her vehicle was located again in a driveway in New Haven and she was taken into custody, police said.

Police said there were three children, ages 5, 4, and 1, in the car when she engaging officers in pursuit. Miller-Smith was charged with larceny, robbery, engaging officers in pursuit and three counts of risk of injury. The children were turned over to their mother, according to police.
