Little Red Schoolhouse Program Helps Cub Scouts Earn Badge

Norwalk, CT- On Friday, March 9, 2012, Darien Cub Scout Pack 161 visited the Little Red Schoolhouse at Mill Hill Historic Park, home of the Norwalk Historical Society. The boys spent the afternoon in the 1826 schoolhouse, where they actively took part in a reenactment of a typical school day of the period. Using hornbooks, slates, quills, and ink, the scouts were taught the three “Rs”: reading, writing and arithmetic. No historical afternoon would be complete without a few 1826 discipline lessons, including the donning of the dunce cap and the arduous task of balancing on the uniped (a one legged stool). The visit concluded with a warm cup of apple cider and a question and answer session. With bellies full of cider and fingers stained with chalk and ink, Pack 161 departed the schoolhouse, transporting themselves back to the present. Their visit to the Little Red Schoolhouse marked the completion of the “What is Great About America” badge requirements. Every scout was presented with his own badge on the lawn outside of the schoolhouse.
