Following Increase In Vehicle Thefts, Norwalk Police Offer Safety Tips For Residents
Police said many of these thefts have involved vehicles left unlocked or with key fobs left inside in Norwalk.
NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Police Department has provided a list of safety tips for residents following a recent increase in vehicle thefts throughout the city.
In a news release, Police Lt. Ramon Tejada said many of these incidents have involved vehicles left unlocked or with key fobs left inside.
According to Tejada, the department has provided the following list of simple precautions for residents:

- Always lock your vehicle, even when it is parked in your driveway.
- Never leave your key fob inside your vehicle.
- Remove valuables from plain sight or take them with you when leaving your vehicle.
- When refueling, do not leave your key fob inside the vehicle while pumping gas or stepping away from the driver's seat.
- Take your key fob with you whenever you exit your vehicle.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
"At gas stations and other public locations," Tejada said in a news release, "vehicle thieves often look for opportunities when drivers are distracted or when vehicles are left unsecured."
According to Tejada, taking these simple preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of theft.

"By working together and staying vigilant, we can help protect our property and keep our community safe," Tejada said. "While these safety practices may seem like common sense, recent incidents are an important reminder that even small oversights can create opportunities for criminals."
Anyone who notices suspicious activity in the city is asked to report it immediately to the Norwalk Police Department, according to Tejada.
