GoFundMe Launched To Help Norwalk Man Displaced By Fire

A GoFundMe has been launched to help a Norwalk man undergoing chemotherapy treatments who was displaced after a fire damaged his apartment.

NORWALK, CT — A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help a Norwalk man undergoing chemotherapy treatments who was displaced after a fire damaged his apartment Friday evening.

The fire broke out in the downstairs apartment of the France Street home where the man, known as Hap Hazzard, lived, according to the fundraiser's description.

Though he was home when the fire broke out, he was able to evacuate the building safely. Though he has been staying in his apartment since the fire, the Norwalk Fire Department deemed it uninhabitable Wednesday.

In a news release earlier this week, Assistant Chief of Operations Edward McCabe said the fire was reported Sept. 9 around 8 p.m. in the back of a building on France Street.

When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire in the kitchen of the first-floor unit. As they attacked the blaze, firefighters found a dog in the kitchen, McCabe said.

The animal was carried outside to receive care and brought to a 24-hour emergency vet center, where it was recovering as of Monday morning, McCabe said.

The fire was contained to the first floor, however residents of both apartments were displaced due to fire and smoke damage, McCabe said. The Norwalk Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
