Portion Of I-95 'Congested' Due To Flooding In Norwalk: UPDATE

A portion of Interstate 95 is congested due to flooding near Norwalk, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

NORWALK, CT — Areas of Norwalk are experiencing flooding due to heavy rains moving through Fairfield County, which prompted a Flash Flood Warning from the National Weather Service around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Interstate 95 south is congested between exits 18 and 15 (4.1 miles) because of flooding between exits 16 and 15, and the right lane is closed as of 5:31 p.m.

The left and center lanes of I-95 north were closed between exits 15 and 16 around 4:15 p.m., according to the DOT. On the DOT website, cars could bee seen on traffic cameras driving through an area of the highway near exit 16 that appeared flooded, and a couple vehicles appeared to be stuck in the water.

Police said on Twitter the following roads in Norwalk are temporarily closed due to flooding:

  • Meadow Street
  • West Avenue near I-95
  • Connecticut Avenue near #500
  • West Cedar near Scribner

Police said drivers should avoid these areas until flooding subsided.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for all of Fairfield County in Southern Connecticut until 6:15 p.m. tonight.

"Norwalk is currently under a Flash Flood Warning," police said Tuesday afternoon on Twitter. "Motorists should NOT drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don’t Drown."
