NORWALK, CT — Police are warning residents of an influx of scam calls involving "hoax kidnappings" recently reported in Norwalk.

In a Facebook post Thursday, police said residents have reported receiving calls from scammers claiming a family member has been kidnapped and demanding a ransom in return.

According to police, some possible indicators of a scam to look for include:

  • Calls do not come from the alleged kidnapped victim's phone.
  • Callers go to great lengths to keep you on the phone.
  • Callers prevent you from calling or locating the "kidnapped" victim.
  • Ransom money is only accepted via wire transfer service.

Residents are asked to contact Norwalk police at 203-854-3000 if they receive a phone call demanding payment or ransom for a kidnapped victim.

"Our officers are investigating these incidents and are continuing to work with other local law enforcement agencies," police said on Facebook.
