NORWALK, CT — A Norwalk man was arrested Sunday night following a "tense" standoff at a Magnolia Avenue residence that lasted over six hours, according to police.

In a news release, Police Sgt. Sofia Gulino said the department received a report around 3:30 p.m. that Robert Lemay, 40, was "intoxicated and angry, had made several threats to use a shotgun against himself and others and retreated into his residence alone."

Gulino said Lemay had multiple firearms registered to him.

The incident prompted "a large police response" that included officers from the department's tactical response and hostage negotiations teams, Gulino said.

"Officers from adjoining agencies assisted Norwalk police officers due to the need of significant manpower," Gulino said in a news release.

Lemay ultimately cooperated with officers and turned himself over to police around 10 p.m., Gulino said. Weapons and ammunition were also removed from the home.

"The Norwalk Police Department is proud of the work of all of the police officers involved in the incident, from patrol to various specialized units," Gulino said. "The various neighboring police departments assisted the city of Norwalk, helping to mitigate the large need for resources and manpower."

Gulino noted the Norwalk community assisted officers as well by waiting patiently while several roads were closed during the standoff, which ended "peacefully and without physical injury."

Lemay was charged with second-degree threatening and breach of peace.
