Man Pulled From Waters Off East Norwalk Is Alive: UPDATE

The man was discovered Thursday morning after witnesses heard him screaming, according to police.

NORWALK, CT — The man who was rescued by Norwalk police from the waters off East Norwalk on Thursday did not die, as authorities initially informed the media, but is alive and being treated in Norwalk Hospital.

"This morning we were updated that the victim in this incident is alive and in the intensive care unit," said Norwalk police Lt. Jared Zwickler. "The Detective Bureau continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident."

When asked how the initial police report that the man had been "pronounced deceased" came about, Zwickler simply added, "Yesterday we were told he was deceased and this morning we were told he is intensive care."

The victim's identity has not been released, and other than he is in the ICU, his condition also has not been disclosed.

According to the initial Norwalk police report, the man was pulled out of the water near Second Street just after 6 a.m. on Thursday.

He received medical attention on shore before he was transported to Norwalk Hospital where police said he was pronounced dead.

Original story: Norwalk police pulled a man out of the water off Second Street in East Norwalk early Thursday morning, but he was later pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital, according to authorities. The man's identity was not disclosed.

Police Sgt. Garrett Kruger and Officer Gabriel Demott were called to the end of Second Street at about 6 a.m. on a report of a man who was heard screaming in the water.

"The individual was offshore and callers reported he had went underwater," said Lt. Jared Zwicker. Kruger and Demott went into the water, retrieved him and brought him to shore where he was given medical attention.

The victim was then transported to the hospital by Norwalk EMS, where he was pronounced dead.

Norwalk police detectives are investigating the incident, and anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Brendan Collins at 203-854-3191.
