Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk to Christen New Catamaran
The 65-foot catamaran cost $2.6 million and is the only research vessel in the country with a hybrid-electric propulsion system.
The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk Friday will officially name and christen its new research vessel, which was built at the Robert E. Derecktor Inc. shipyard in Mamaroneck.
An invitation-only ceremony is scheduled for Friday that will include representatives from the shipyard, the aquarium and others, according to aquarium spokesman Dave Sigworth.

The 65-foot catamaran cost $2.6 million and is the only research vessel in the country with a hybrid-electric propulsion system, which means it will run run silently on the water and significantly reduce fuel costs, Sigworth added. The ship also will double the capacity “for programming on the water from 29 to 60 participants per cruise.”
