Norwalk To Appoint New Police Chief, Deputy Chief This Month

NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Police Commission is scheduled to appoint a new permanent police chief and deputy chief this month following former Chief Thomas Kulhawik's retirement, according to city officials.

City spokesperson Michelle Woods Matthews confirmed to Patch the commission plans to appoint a new chief, along with a deputy chief, during a meeting Jan. 23.

Last month, the city appointed Deputy Chief James Walsh to serve as the department's interim chief.

Kulhawik officially retired Jan. 4 after nearly 40 years of service with the department, including 10 as chief. He was appointed as chief in the summer of 2012 and has served with the department since 1983.

"Chief Kulhawik has done a remarkable job leading the Norwalk Police Department," Rilling said last month, "and his rise through the ranks during his nearly forty-year career in the department is a testament to his hard work and dedication to protecting the community."
