Norwalk Hospital Faces Penalties for Excessive Hospital-Acquired Infections

The hospital had excessive hospital-acquired infection rates in two categories, according to the Hartford Courant.

Norwalk Hospital is among 11 around the state that faces penalties for having excessive hospital-acquired infection rates of its patients, according to the Hartford Courant.

“Eleven of Connecticut’s 30 hospitals qualify to face penalties for exceeding two of the infection-related categories and a patient safety measure, according to a preliminary list of 761 hospitals identified in April as having high infection rates,” the Courant reported. The federal government hasn’t said what the penalties will be.

The 10 other institutions are The Hospital of Central Connecticut, Hartford, Stamford, Bridgeport, Danbury, John Dempsey, Johnson Memorial, Waterbury, Windham and Yale-New Haven hospitals.

Of the 50 states, Connecticut had the highest proportion of its hospitals exceeding the infection standards set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the Courant, which said it relied on data compiled by Kaiser Health News.
