Obituary: Gaywood 'Woody' Hartshorne, 92, Of Norwalk

Woody worked as a banker at the Union Trust Company and spent over 25 years volunteering at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk.

Gaywood "Woody" Hartshorne, 92 of Norwalk, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Norwich, Connecticut, he moved to South Newfane, Vermont in 1934 with his parents the late William Bibb Hartshorne and Marion (Ford) Hartshorne. Gaywood Hartshorne was the husband of the late Sally Gager Hartshorne to whom he was married to for over 58 years.

Woody graduated from Darrow Preparatory School in 1949 and Nichols College in 1952. After graduation, he worked briefly as an insurance claims adjuster but, would spend his working career as a banker at the Union Trust Company retiring in 1990. He then went on to spend over 25 years as a volunteer at the Maritime Center (now Aquarium) were he put in over 10,000 hours and was recognized for his accomplishment of most volunteer hours served.

Woody was also an active member of the First Congregational Church on the Green where he and Sally were married in 1957. He served many roles in the church such as Sunday School teacher, Keeper of the Clock, Beta Circle Husband, he was also on both the finance committee and the Parish Administration committee and last but, not least, he was a Deacon in the church.

Woody is survived by his son, Peter G. Hartshorne and his daughter, Nancy J. Hartshorne both of Norwalk. He is also survived by his brother Whitney Hartshorne of Townshend, Vermont, a niece Carol (Steven) Funk of Maine and three nephews, Bill (Jeannine) Howard, David (Violet) Howard of Florida and Jim Howard of West Haven, CT. He was predeceased by his loving wife Sally Gager Hartshorne.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Congregational Church on the Green at a later date to still be determined.
