Obituary: Robert Stephen Shankman, 77, Of Norwalk

In 1994, Bob was appointed vice president and auditor of The Norwalk Savings Society.

Robert Stephen Shankman was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on April 3, 1945, and passed away peacefully on October 31, 2022. He was the son of the late Louis and Florence Vogel Shankman. He graduated from Cherry Lawn School in Darien, CT.

Bob (as he liked to go by) served in the U.S. Army from 1965 – 1967. He was a member of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade and served in Vietnam in artillery for a year. After returning from Vietnam in 1967, Bob joined The Norwalk Savings Society as a teller and worked his way up to assistant treasurer and assistant vice-president. In 1994, he was appointed vice president and auditor of The Norwalk Savings Society.

Bob attended the University of Bridgeport and received certificates from the American Institute of Banking. He was also a graduate of The Connecticut School of Finance and Management (CSBA).

Bob is survived by a sister, Susan Shankman Semchuk (Myron), a brother Martin Shankman (Phyllis Eldridge), 3 nieces, Anne Marie Semchuk Donnelly (Eddie Donnelly), Marianne Semchuk (Anthony Danler), Leah Shankman Aizen (Ron Aizen), and a nephew, Dr. Stewart Shankman. He is also survived by great nieces and great nephews – Avi Aizen, Jaden Aizen, Jonah Shankman and Serena Shankman.

Bob enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino with The Norwalk Senior Center, attending programs at the local VFW, breakfast at The Commuter Café and Sherwood Diner, following UCONN women’s basketball and socializing with friends and family. He also loved going to parties. You could always count on Bob to be the first one to arrive to a party to make sure he got the best parking space, help out with whatever was needed, and make sure that he had a chance to scope out the dessert table before the party started.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Independent Hebrew Society/ Temple Shalom Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
