Obituary: Wilbur 'Bill' Taylor, 94, Of Norwalk

Wilbur "Bill" Taylor, 94, of Norwalk, passed away on December 10, 2022 at Norwalk Hospital. He was born on April 4, 1928 in Junction City, Kansas. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Terry, of 56 years, as well as their son Mark.

Survivors include his three sons, Lee (Denise), Jeff (Susan) and Matt (Cheryll), four loving grandchildren, Kelly, Billy, Becky and Melanie, and three cherished great-grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler and Harlan.

Bill grew up on a small rural farm in Kansas. The farm life shaped his core Christian values and work ethic. His early schooling was in a one room schoolhouse close to where he lived. He went on to excel academically, while participating in many clubs and activities at Junction City High School.

Bill continued his education at his beloved Kansas State University. He completed his bachelor and master’s degrees in microbiology in four and a half years, while working almost full time to pay for his living and college expenses. After college, he moved across the country to work for R.T. Vanderbilt, in Norwalk, to head a research department. Working for Vanderbilt, he made numerous long term friends and contacts while developing many patents during his tenure.

Bill was very involved in his sons’ early activities, which included Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League and Pony League. He also served his community as an elected member of Norwalk’s Common Council for several terms. He worked closely with Mayor Esposito on many initiatives and projects.

Bill and Terry, along with some of their lifelong friends, worked tirelessly in the early 1960's to help build St. Matthew Church. He was a trustee of the church and was on the finance committee for many years. Recently, he was awarded the St. Augustine Medal, by the Bishop for his many years of service to the Church.

His family will receive friends on Saturday, December 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. His Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, with entombment at St. John Cemetery.
