Over 400 Class Of 2018 Brien McMahon Students To Graduate

NORWALK, CT – The Brien McMahon Class of 2018 will celebrate with pomp and circumstance during the 57th annual commencement Tuesday evening. Almost 430 Brien McMahon seniors will receive their diplomas during the ceremony.

According to a news release, graduates have been accepted to a variety of institutes of higher learning across the United States and will attend Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Central Connecticut State, Connecticut College, Emory University, Ithaca College, Purdue University and more.

Students from this year’s graduating class earned a variety of scholarships including the Suzanne Brown Koroshetz Scholarship, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 12 Education Gran, BMHS Alumni Association Scholarship, Diane C Wilson Memorial Scholarship, Navy ROTC Four Year Scholarship, Norwalk Federation of Teachers Scholarship, Rowayton School Alumni Scholarship and many more.

“At Brien McMahon, the mantra ‘success begins with commitment’ is one that our students apply to academics, sports, music, philanthropic work, friendship and many aspects of their lives,” Brien McMahon Principal Scott Hurwitz said in a release. “This senior class embodies this mentality from the field to the classroom. These students welcomed me as principal, and through their actions as a class, set an
example of success for future classes to live up to.”

This year’s Class of 2018 Valedictorian is Amelia Becker, the Salutatorian is Natalie Pitteway and the Senior Class President is Tatiana Arias. NPS Superintendent Steven Adamowski will offer remarks to the graduating class during this evening’s graduation along with Brien McMahon staff members.

Many graduating students participated in a variety of distinctive courses, programs and pathways including the Center for Global Studies, McMahon Healthcare Academy, Project Lead The Way, and Advanced Placement courses for college credit.

These specialized offerings are in alignment with the Strategic Operating Plan objectives to implement the right strategies, systems and supports to ensure that all students leave Grade 12 ready for future academic or work success.

This class also participated in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities from sports to music to social justice through the Center for Youth Leadership.

Additionally, a group of students who participated in HOSA, an afterschool program that supports students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, will compete in medical competitions against participants from around the country and beyond at a conference in Texas this summer.

The Center for Global Studies (CGS) at Brien McMahon High School is an interdistrict magnet school focused on teaching students the languages, culture, history, and literature of China, Japan and the Middle East. A vibrant two-week exchange program allows students to welcome visitors from those countries into their homes and enables CGS students to immerse themselves in the cultures they study.

The McMahon Healthcare Academy allows students to take advanced science courses as part of their regular program. This pathway provides students with the opportunity to attain an applied Associates Degree and/or a certification in a healthcare field before graduation.

Additionally, this year marks the first opportunity for students to be awarded the Connecticut State Seal of Biliteracy. This honor, established by the State Board of Education, acknowledges that a student has demonstrated mastery of two or more languages. The Seal of Biliteracy also provides recognition to English learners for the great value of developing English and maintaining their primary language.

In 2017, the IB program at Brien McMahon was authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The International Baccalaureate program, leading to an IB diploma, is a rigorous and comprehensive two-year preuniversity course of study based on curriculum used in schools around the world.

IB diplomas often have a positive impact on college acceptance rates. In coming years, students will have the opportunity to graduate with IB diplomas.

The Brien McMahon 2017 graduation rate was 94.5. The Center for Global Studies cohort graduation rate was reported separately from the overall BMHS graduation rate for the first time. The 2017 graduation rate for CGS is 98.4. The overall NPS graduation rate for 2017 was higher that the State for the third year in a row.

This ranking positions NPS as first in our District Reference Group (DRG), which compares NPS with other districts with similar socioeconomic status across the state.
