NORWALK, CT — A report of a shooting incident Friday afternoon near Richards Avenue was determined to be unfounded, according to police.

In an updated Facebook post around 4:30 p.m., police said they received a call earlier in the day reporting a person had been shot in the area of Richards Avenue near Connecticut Avenue, triggering a large police response.

Officers established a perimeter and searched the area out of an abundance of caution, however they were unable to locate a victim, according to police. When officers located the caller, they determined the incident had not actually occurred.

According to police, officers were also able to make contact with the reported victim and determined the incident was unfounded and there was never any danger.

Around 2:30 p.m., police said on Facebook officers were "actively investigating an incident" on Richards Avenue near Connecticut Avenue but did not provide further details.

In an updated Facebook post around 3 p.m., police said the incident appeared unfounded and there was no danger to the public. They also encouraged drivers to avoid the area of Richards Avenue due to traffic congestion.

Police also noted the investigation is still ongoing.
