Popular Norwalk Bakery Saved Last Minute, Will Remain Open

The downtown staple had previously announced it would be closing its doors, but it has now been saved by a last-minute purchase.

NORWALK, CT — After previously announcing it would close its doors for good this month, a popular Norwalk bakery has been saved by a last-minute purchase from another longtime local baker.

According to the Norwalk Hour, Muro's Original New York Bakery & Deli on Main Street will keep its ovens going after baker Leo Spinelli, owner of Uncle Leo’s Not Just Bagels in Redding, recently reached out with a proposal to purchase the bakery.

Owner Dominic Muro was enthusiastic about the purchase, which will result in New York Bakery using some of its commercial kitchen space to expand production for Uncle Leo’s, according to the Hour.

According to the bakery's website, the store has been open for business in downtown Norwalk since the early 1950's. A family run business, New York Bakery has used the same recipes customers have been enjoying for decades.

"We as a family like to think of our patrons as our family and friends as well. We have a self serve coffee bar and a full-service deli," the website reads. "All our baking and cooking is done on the premises from scratch. You can be sure to see one of us greeting patrons on any given day, or making you a lunch sandwich in the deli."

They also offer a large-scale catering menu, offering everything under the sun from buffalo wings, chicken parmigiana and subs to cold cut platters that serve 10-35 people.

Muro had previously said factors like permit parking at a nearby lot and competition from grocery stores had significantly impacted his business, and the decision was something that took a lot of thought, according to the Hour.

The bakery has received high praise from customers over the years. Yelp reviewer Kathryn S. said "This is the bakery I grew up with so I have to stop in whenever I'm in town. I love their chocolate swirl cookies and their hard rolls are still as good as ever."

Reviewer Joey V. also gave his praise, calling the bakery "the original Norwalk deli. They've been open for business in town since the 1950's. You can feel the history inside. The quality to price ratio here is exceptionally strong, you can see why they are busy."
