School Year Ends, Summer Camp Begins

Day Camp for Girls K-12 Helps Girls Learn Sailing, Navigation and Leadership Skills

This summer, all girls grades K-12 can take a free bus service from Norwalk to Camp Candlewood in New Fairfield, CT. There, girls can learn how to sail, how to navigate on the water, and teach other girls how to sail.

Camp Candlewood is welcoming back its 2013 Camp Director Tina! Tina loves to sing, cook, and travel, and has been involved with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut camps for 30 years. Tina is looking forward to helping girls learn to sail and “Camp Like a Girl” this summer, which means campers will experience the joys of living with and in nature.

Thanks to Camp Candlewood’s beautiful Candlewood Lake, girls can have the opportunity to participate in the camp’s “Intro to Sailing”, and “Learn to Sail” program. Girls can start with a one-week beginner sailing program and then move on to a higher level program where girls can learn control, navigation, and how to maneuver a small sail boat. They also can learn the necessary skills it takes to lead a small crew. These two programs are available to girls entering grades four through eight.

Operated by Girl Scouts of Connecticut, Camp Candlewood is proud to be licensed by the State of Connecticut and accredited by the American Camping Association which shows a commitment to offering high quality programs, meeting safety standards, and following the best business practices.

Summer camp helps boost girls’ self-esteem and confidence, thus improving their social skills and establishing a greater sense of independence. During their summer at Camp Candlewood, girls can develop leadership qualities, learn outdoor skills, receive swim lessons, and more! Younger girls begin by leading songs and playing games. Girls in grades four or higher can try their hand at archery, and girls in grades nine through twelve can participate in a number of leadership programs.

At Camp Candlewood, each member of the summer camp staff has been carefully screened and chosen for their skills and experience. All staff receives more than 30 hours of training in child development, teambuilding, safety, and risk management.
