From Liberty to Legacy: Exploring American Ideals in the Musicals "1776" and "Hamilton"

Join performer and lecturer Michael Langlois for an engaging exploration of America’s founding through two groundbreaking Broadway musicals: 1776 and Hamilton. In From Liberty to Legacy, Langlois examines how each musical presents a distinct vision of a nation at a crossroads, shaped not only by the Revolutionary era, but also by the times in which the shows themselves were created (1969 and 2015).

Through discussion and video clips from both productions, this lively lecture explores how changing cultural values, political tensions, and ideas about identity influence the way Americans tell their national origin story. Comparing the perspectives, themes, and historical interpretations found in 1776 and Hamilton, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how history is continually reimagined for new generations. Opportunities for reflection and conversation will be included throughout the program.
