REVOLUTIONARY PK-8 ART & SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP

STEAM-roll your children's minds this summer with a new innovative liberal arts PK-8 summer camp

**SAVE THE DATES** JULY 12-AUG 14

MILFORD— STEAM-roll your children’s minds this summer with a new innovative liberal arts PK-8 summer camp that teaches how all things relate to each other across a variety of disciplines. “STEAM” is derived from the well-established STEM program that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—but widens the gap by adding Art to further drive innovation. This accredited theory is sponsored by the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence and is gaining momentum across the United States.

STEAM is being offered for the first time in Connecticut—and it’s here in Milford, conveniently located on the grounds of Saint Gabriel’s School. Taught by certified professionals, this non-denominational camp is held during the months of July and August and is open to all surrounding towns.

“The idea is to encourage art and design at the grade school level to create out-of-the-box thinkers,” said Dr. Gail Kingston, principal of Saint Gabriel School. “STEAM enrichment focuses on connecting the dots and broadening cognitive development by blending the sciences with art.”

RISD president John Maeda believes, “Superior innovation comes from bringing artists and designers and scientists and engineers together.” Think architecture, city street development, and technology start-ups. Apple computers was designed with an emphasis on typography! It’s hard to imagine where we would be without art meeting science and math.

Some of classes open to preschool through eighth grade include creative movement, green architecture, building a water wave, creating lightning, magnetic fields, and currents, the world of fantasy literature, and designing your bedroom to scale.

Students will also use art to create a symbol for their name, “carve a piece of the pi,” and launch an iPhone into space! Each class is led through hands-on instruction and many include a take-away from projects conducted in class.

“In order to raise a generation of leaders, disciplines need to be creatively conjoined,” said Kingston. “It is our hope this camp will have a hand in this development and kids will have tremendous fun in the process!”
