Making Sure the Dog (and His Owner) Are OK

We survived Hurricane Irene and luckily, we are still around to talk about it.

We consider ourselves very lucky that we didn't get any damage from Hurricane Irene and are thankful we did not sustain any major damages.

However, others were not so lucky: they had trees topple on their cars and roofs or were flooded out by the swollen Housatonic River and many streams and tributaries.

Many are still without power and have not had a shower. If you know anyone without power, invite them over for a shower or a bite to eat.

People are worrying about all the food in the refrigerator spoiling. I've been there. During Hurricane Gloria, I was living in an apartment in Ansonia and did not have power for a week...yet it was on across the street! I lost everything in the refrigerator and freezer.

On Saturday and Sunday, I'm sure everyone was saying a prayer in the silence of their hearts and minds that the storm would not be that bad. I went to 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church and it was standing room only. The church had decided to cancel all of its Sunday Masses; it's better if people stay off the roads during a storm - they really don't need to be out.

As a reporter, I've been out in storms and tree limbs and downed power lines have hit my car. So don't go out unless it's really necessary during a storm.

It's really scary waiting for a storm like this to hit because you just don't know what it will bring or where. We had a few branches come down on our driveway, but our neighbor on Route 67, less than a tenth of a mile from our house, had a giant tree come crashing down on her car and a truck. My husband and I went over there to make sure they were OK and they were and very appreciative that we came by to check on them. They have a cute little pug named Frank, so we joked that we came by to make sure the dog was OK; they liked that and it made them smile even though their car was totalled by the tree.

I'm sure we all said extra prayers over the weekend. Our prayers now go out to those who have damage or have lost power and our hope is they get help as soon as possible.
