What I learned from going door to door in Oxford

Part of running for office in Oxford is what politicians call "KNOCKING ON DOORS" . My sampling has taught me a lot about the town and the people who populate it.

To be sure, my observations are limited in scope.  I visited homes that  only had Republican occupants.  The reason for this limitation is the practical consideration that I had to touch base with my fellow Republicans because I have to contend with a Republican primary election on September 13th, and only Republicans can vote.  To be sure, many of the homes that I visited had occupants who were affiliated with the Democratic Party or some were unaffiliated but they resided with at least one Republican.

I found the residents of Oxford to be extremely hospitable.  They liked to talk about the town and I heard no negatives about what a great place Oxford is. Some people offered me food and some liquid refreshment.  Since I am trying to lose weight, I turned down most offers, but I can't resist canolies or apple pie.(don't tell my wife)

Oxford citizens are overwhelminly Yankee fans.  The second team is the Red Sox and then a smattering of Met fans.(including me)  College is totally Uconn(which is a tough thing for a Syracuse alum to admit) Pro football is Giants without a doubt.(finally I get one right) Everyone is proud of the Oxford Wolverines.

Oxford people like to garden.  Some of the flowers and vegtables are amazing.  They take pride in their yard but are very into privacy.  Some of the driveways go  for 1/2 mile or more.  There are brooks and trees that I never suspected existed in Oxford.  Much of the beauty in town is not readilly acessable from the road or even visible by a casual drive by.

Oxford People are passionate about their politics.  They know all of the players and they have strong opinions.  The number one issue that I could assertain was the poor condition of the roads.  The current difficulty with the former  tax collector is a close second, followed by the perception that people's voices couldn't be heard at town meetings.  Economic development quickly took over the top spot when it was explained that success in this area could stabalize taxes while allowing quality of life improvements.  Most people felt that politicians in town have gotten out of hand with personal attacks and they should all provide substative approaches to complex issues.

What I learned most is that I like this town and its people.  We are outspoken and well informed.  We care about each other and respect our neighbor's right to be involved or be left alone.  If you ever wonder if you made the right decision in living in Oxford, run for office and knock on doors.  YOU WILL LEARN A LOT ABOUT YOUR TOWN.
