Mommy and Me Yoga at the Library

Get spiritual this Wednesday.

Ommmm.

Even when I didn’t know anything about yoga, I recognized this sound. It brought to mind pop-culture caricatures of yogis sitting cross-legged, up-turned hands on knees, eyes shut and humming.

Until just over a year ago, I didn’t realize that “Om” (pronounced ohm) is more than a fancy way to hum. Its meaning is complex, but according to Yoga Journal, Om is basically the sound that runs through the universe. It’s a vibration emanating from everyone and everything, connecting one and all.

Pretty heavy, right?

When my mom first invited me to attend a yoga class with her, I learned right away that yoga is a spiritual practice that raises philosophical ideas, such as the concept of Om. I also learned that yoga offers a workout which improves strength and flexibility. Plus, it relieves stress. These are all advantages that I’m sure other novices quickly discover. But there is one benefit that the yoga studio didn’t advertise.

Yoga is something fun to do with my mom.

We root for each other as we attempt challenging poses. We commiserate over our shared lack of flexibility. We sneak wicked grins during the more awkward postures. Most importantly, we make sure that the other one hasn’t fallen asleep during meditation.

Although I only practice sporadically, I think I’ve finally grasped most of the basics. But sometimes, I still struggle with the concept of Om. I find it difficult to fathom that I am connected to a rock, or a squirrel, or Charlie Sheen, for example. Yet there is one connection that yoga has clearly strengthened – the one between me and my mom. Now the library’s youngest patrons and their parents have the opportunity to experience that bond, too.

On Wednesday, March 16 at 9:30 a.m., the library will host a Mommy & Me Yoga Class for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers. This free program will be taught by Kripalu certified teacher Amba Jeanne Dziewulski of Yoga by Jeanne in Oxford.

The class will focus on postures that improve balance, as well as stretch and tone muscles. Dziewulski will also teach techniques for stress management that she says can benefit children and adults throughout their lives. Besides the practical advantages, the class promises to be a lot of fun! And don’t let the name of this event fool you – dads, grandparents and nannies are welcome, too.
